Alley Wei: Traditional Taiwanese Soyabean Milk at Yishun

I have always been a big fan of 豆浆油条 (soyabean milk and fried fritters) and I would travel all the way to Geylang for it.  Having to see a Taiwanese brand open an outlet in Singapore selling 豆浆油条 really excites me.  The place is well decorated with a classic wood concept giving you an expression of dining in a Taiwan street alley.

However, it is so popular that there is a long queue every day, especially in the evening time. Either it is a long waiting time for seats or it’s sold out for the various types of bean curbs by 830pm. I have never really gotten a chance to try it since its opening until recently and it was not a pleasant experience.

It was about 6:30pm. I was in the queue waiting for a table and a male cashier showed hand signs asking me to come in.  After placing my order, the staff asked to get an empty table and so I did.  I thought it was free and easy so I went to the nearest empty table and sat.  Soon after, an elderly waitress shouted at me telling me that I wasn’t allowed to sit there as the table is for 4 and not for 1.  Sure, I can move to another table.  However, what I wasn’t pleased about was that, if at the stage of queuing, there was someone attending to the customers asking for the number of pax that will be dining in, the misunderstanding would have been avoided.  Besides the point, there wasn’t a need to shout at a customer. I always believe that there is a better way of communication.

Nevertheless, another waitress came over and passed me the menu.  She looked as though I owe her money… Hahaha.  Gosh!  The people working here really need to put up some smiles.

After a short wait, I was to collect my orders at the counter.  I ordered the Soyabean Milk cold, Hot Sweet Bean curd, and Fried Fritters.  The cold Soya Bean Milk was fine.  I like the balance of sweetness.  However, the Hot Sweet Bean curd is disappointing.  The texture is smooth, but it was neither sweet nor hot.  The Fried Fritters was too thick for my liking (individual preference) and if you dipped into the Soya Bean Milk, it wouldn’t adsorb as you wanted it to be.

Generally, I am fine with the food but the service staffs really need to improve their attitude and do their job better.
